Knowledge graph
Definition
A knowledge graph is a network of entities, such as customers, products and metrics, connected by relationships, so systems can follow connections to answer questions that span many sources.
What it means in practice
Search and retrieval find documents that look similar to a question. A knowledge graph follows relationships, which is what you need when the answer depends on connections: what depends on what, why a number changed, or which customers a change affects.
Analytics is full of these questions, from metric lineage to impact analysis. Knowledge graphs work alongside semantic layers and vector search rather than replacing them.
Example
To answer "Which customers are affected if we discontinue this SKU?", a knowledge graph walks from the SKU to contracts, to customers, to their revenue.
