Business context

Definition

Business context is the knowledge that gives data its meaning in a specific company: how metrics are defined, which rules and exceptions apply, what terms mean in each team, and how the business actually operates.

What it means in practice

Data records facts; business context explains them. The same "revenue" column can mean different things depending on refunds, currencies, fiscal calendars and accounting rules that live in documents and people's heads.

AI cannot infer this context from data alone. Capturing it in a governed layer, rather than in prompts or inside a model, is what makes AI answers accurate and consistent.

Example

A company's data shows a customer as "active", but business context says accounts on a payment hold are excluded from active-customer counts.
