Context engineering
Definition
Context engineering is the practice of designing and supplying the information an AI system needs at the moment it answers, such as definitions, data, rules and instructions, so its output is accurate and grounded.
What it means in practice
Fine-tuning changes what a model knows; context engineering changes what it sees. For enterprise analytics, most of what matters is company-specific and changes often, which makes context the more practical lever.
Context assembled ad hoc at question time is hard to govern and scale. The most reliable approach keeps business context in a certified layer that every AI application draws from.
Example
Before an assistant answers a revenue question, it is given the certified revenue definition, the fiscal calendar and the user's access rights, rather than raw table names.
