Semantic governance
Definition
Semantic governance is the practice of managing business definitions, metrics and rules as shared, owned and certified assets, so every BI tool and AI application uses the same meaning.
What it means in practice
Data governance controls who can access data and how it is protected. Semantic governance controls what the data means: who owns each definition, how changes are reviewed, and where every number comes from.
Without it, each new AI application rebuilds its own definitions and guardrails, creating what we call semantic governance debt.
Example
When finance updates the definition of "net revenue", the change is reviewed, certified and immediately used by every dashboard, assistant and agent.
